I do believe that it's reasonable to expect and require some base set of skills to be in the classroom. Should you be as edu-techy as so many of us, probably not. But, there is no way I can allow the excuses, that "I just don't get or know technology," or "Technology is something teacher "x" does in his class, but not me; to be okay for my kids' teachers anymore.Michael Wackerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18107262651754470657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3719830807101737046.post-53992025263299057402010-07-28T12:20:53.582-07:002010-07-28T12:20:53.582-07:00What do we mean by "technology literate"...What do we mean by "technology literate"? That is a great point, I remember you...@Chris Craft
That is a great point, I remember you mentioning that in your presentation at Educon. What we are measuring is the far transfer of changing classroom practice I think.
As far as you not being in PD you are selling yourself short, every tutorial you create, every presentation you give, every time you prompt someone to think critically (like you just did to me) you are in PD :) And, if you fall in love with Colorado (you will) I know a district that would be LUCKY to have you. :)

@Eric Townsley I am starting to think more and more that the only way to truly measure effectiveness r any transfer for teacher professional learning (PD) is via observation.
Thanks to both of you guys for giving more to think about!Michael Wackerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18107262651754470657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3719830807101737046.post-62196172799962484532010-04-14T10:26:22.561-07:002010-04-14T10:26:22.561-07:00If you're going to talk transfer, it may be he...If you're going to talk transfer, it may be helpful to delineate that a bit. Transfer is usually divided into two areas, near transfer and far transfer.

Near transfer is using a learned skill or knowledge in a similar situation.

Far transfer is using a learned skill or knowledge in a markedly different situation.

Before you can answer the question of how to measure transfer you must answer the question as to what your goal of learning is. Without that, there is no transfer.

For example, if I want to teach you to search the web. Near transfer would be watching you search Google for a similar search topic that I handed you.

Far transfer would be you visiting a meta-search engine and searching multiple sites and analyzing the results.

I think all too often we go into PD events without a clear goal in mind. Perhaps we'd benefit from more clearly articulating our goals? Not being in PD, I can't say for sure.

ChrisAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14159705510161241672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3719830807101737046.post-68680111950657587972010-04-14T07:07:49.025-07:002010-04-14T07:07:49.025-07:00This is tough. I think that laptop initiatives when done well are tremendous, I didn't even mention in the post about SLA. They get it right, students are the first and sometime s second level of IT, they feel ownership of their machines, and they are seeing tremendous success. Whenever I talk about MoodleShare I always mention the Moodle Exchange and the Moodle Commons.

This is a project that a friend and I have been working on that is something we can continue to develop and try to spread the word via various social networks, which is something I don't think the other two are out there doing. I strongly believe that teachers have to start working together to take the content they've created and put it out there for others to use/enhance/further develop. We have so many resources available to us as educators that it's silly not to work collectively. I've grown tired of seeing schools in rural area or poor districts limited based on their ability to purchase curriculum. I think Moodle offers us the best option to spread resources and thought it was something I could do to get the ball rolling a little more quickly.

Thanks for helping spread the word. I've posted some of my own classes there and am working on others to share as well. I'm hoping that others will start doing the same.Mr. Jonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02928142672137841146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3719830807101737046.post-79239464638696301342010-03-11T10:50:25.778-08:002010-03-11T10:50:25.778-08:00Yes, great point about moodlecommons.I am optimist...Yes, great point about moodlecommons.I am optimistic that this will grow; after all, I think the value is there, the need is there, now we just need to get the courses in there. :)Michael Wackerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18107262651754470657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3719830807101737046.post-90721182000616015642010-03-11T09:37:17.907-08:002010-03-11T09:37:17.907-08:00Check out http://moodlecommons.org It has been aro...Check out http://moodlecommons.org It has been around for a couple of years.
